Welcome to Modern Gundog Training. In this series of programmes we will cover every aspect of producing a well-rounded, capable and steady springer spaniel in the shooting field. We will work with a variety of Springers with different characters and levels of ability. The different stages are approached with dogs facing the challenges for the first time, therefore issues and difficulties organically arise throughout the programmes. We then look to solve these issues using kind, firm, modern methods of training
In the first instalment we begin our exciting journey towards a trained Springer spaniel. We will take young puppies through the very first stages of training and socialisation, with the emphasis on the dogs having fun and enjoying their early lessons. With these positive foundations in place we will be well positioned to move on to the more advanced training in the rest of the series.

In the second instalment of the series we begin taking our young Springer’s through their basic training. We start to make our training sessions more challenging and look to make progress whenever the dog is ready. We will be finding the balance between ensuring the dog achieves success whilst increasing the difficulty of the training tasks.

In the third instalment of the series our Springer’s are becoming capable young adults. Our dogs are developing in confidence and have an increasing set of skills, but are also growing from teenagers into young adults, which presents us as the trainer with the challenge of being firm and fair. This section represents the essential preparation before work in the shooting field.

We are ready to enjoy the rewards of our previous training but there is still much to learn. We will take particular care when taking our dogs shooting for the first team, as these moments are crucial for ensuring a smooth transition between basic training and work in the field.
